Difficult people on your Christmas shopping list? Maybe they are tough to find presents for. Maybe they are just difficult in general.Either way, this might be the perfect solution. "Of course!" you'll say. "Why didn't I think of a box of potatoes?"
This fabulous offer is from the November 1960 House Beautiful - a magazine crammed with bizarre present ideas (in other words, I'll be scanning just about the whole thing and posting them too).
Seriously, I'll bet you never thought of giving someone a box of baking potatoes. Did you? Well, this is the first time that they were even available in the beautiful gift box. With a ribbon, too!
Think how thrilled everyone will be on Christmas morning to see what's in the big old gift-wrapped box. And surprised! Don't forget surprised.
And then next year you can get them some sour cream.

Any one gives me a box of potatoes for Christmas I'm going to sock 'em one!
At first I couldn't figure out why someone would want these babies. But I see now, reading the ad, that they're almost a full pound each and only 2% of the crop is that large. Hmmm. Still not interested. Cracks. Me. Up.
hmm a box of baking potatoes, maybe times were tough back then? otherwise I have no other answer for this um...unusual gift.
L...
I got to git busy canceling all them fruitcakes I ordered and replacing them with a boxes-o-spuds. Girl, you have the greatest ideas!
Eve
Hmm. Somehow I find this present only slightly better than a stocking full of coal. And I happen to like baked potatoes! But I'll buy my own, thanks. I don't want them as a present.
I did get coal one year, so potatoes would probably count as an upgrade for me.
When I got married a cousin sent a monogrammed brick. True story. I found it as baffling as if he'd sent a potato.
As an aside, my niece once mailed her brother a potato -- stuck a stamp and address label on it and the post office delivered.
Kristie - Oh absolutely! They are not on my wish list either.
Kathy - Yes, that is the big selling point, they are the pride of Idaho. You could make a whole lot of mashed potatoes with these.
Amy - I don't know, I don't think that times were that tough in 1960. But they were - weird, I guess.
Eve - Oh, but fruitcake is so classically retro! Perhaps the potatoes could be a New Year's present or for a birthday - the ad does say you can order until May!
Tori - Yeah, me too, because I get these things almost every week. Hey, a Christmas present in every week's groceries. Lucky me.
Needless To Say - And these are hand-picked too, you can't say that about coal.
Feefifoto - I can't top your anecdotes. A monogrammed brick! A potato that went through the mail! Absolutely amazing. Thanks for sharing! :)
haha! this may be a great way to get rid of the ones that sit in my kitchen and rot! ;)
That's gotta be the worst Christmas present EVER. OMG LOL.
Ok, maybe my family and I are odd, but any of us would be delighted with a box of big bakers like that! There've been times in my life where I literally didn't know where the next bag of groceries would come from. I never turn down food, specially taters! Beats the heck out of yet another nic nac that needs to be dusted.
I'd have to agree with Melanie..at least, I'd rather get a box of baking potatoes than another fruitcake!
LOL Potatoes..Well how about poetry in stead LOL...Oh goodness I cannot even imagine unwrapping potatoes!
Here is a lovely Christmas prose...
"The Unexpected Gift"
I hope it helps you treasure your family this season...

Thank you and many blessings!
You should have a contest! What better prize than a box of potatoes?
I would be oh so happy to get a box of potatoes. Oh. So. Happy.
My father-in-law will love this! He's very difficult to please, but who could pass up 20 pounds of Idaho Bakers?
Thanks.
;)
Let's just call this "Spud Duds."
Chat Blanc - Absolutely, just put the bad ones at the bottom!
Gumby - I think it might be, but there are some other horrible things in that same magazine...
Melanie - That is a good point. And really, I do actually like potatoes!
Shay - Depends on the fruitcake, of course. I'll bet you'd like Eve's! :)
The Muse - Thank you! I will make a note to go check that out.
Preston- First, of course, I need a box of potatoes! Oh, and a contest. I was actually thinking of doing one in January.
Bee- Maybe I will send you some! You and Shay and Melanie, I can check you off the Christmas list! :)
Jennifer - My pleasure! Maybe Amazon has something like this.
Man - That's pretty good, thank you!
Love it!! Hilarious that they tried to pass off potatoes as a present!
Meanwhile, there was a time when the Northern Pacific Railway offered on its menu the Big Baked Potato, 1-1/2 lb. mininum weight (reduced to 1-1/4 lb. after World War II), in its dining cars.
(BTW, I'm a newish EntreCard member. Just so you know.)
Mandy - Me too, it is one of my favorites from that magazine it is from.
Exaggerato - Welcome to EC! I will get over and visit you tomorrow, I already used up my drops today otherwise I'd do it right now -
